The devil has inspired many tales, stories, as well as folk and classical music. Sometimes glaringly obvious, at other times so subtle that it is hard to discern, the subject of the devil can be found in music raging from the Baroque masters to Argentinian tango.
We start our dance with the devil with Vivaldi’s La Folia and some impassioned tango by Astor Piazzolla, taking in folk fiddling from the British Isles en route. Pieces by Locatelli show us some devilishly difficult trills and tricks from the Italian masters of the Baroque before we head over the Atlantic to the Appalachian Mountains of the American South. Our concert comes to a close with folk-inspired music from Aaron Copland and the Charles Daniels Band.
Dance with the Devil is an invitation to experience the diabolical side of music.
