Shoulder to Shoulder ~ Barbican, London

  • Milton Court Concert Hall 1 Milton Street London, England, EC2Y 9BH United Kingdom (map)

LGBT+ chamber choir The Fourth Choir celebrates its tenth anniversary with a programme of a cappella choral music spanning centuries.

Dame Ethel Smyth – suffragette and the first woman composer to be granted damehood – provides the inspiration for a journey through 1000 years of music-making. We’ll hear music from the Renaissance, the 19th century and the present day with two world premieres: a setting of poetry by Emily Dickinson by composer Kerry Andrew, and a special commission that pairs words by Ashleigh Wilder to music by singer-songwriter and activist CN Lester.

Formed in 2013 with the aim of representing the LGBT+ community in London’s classical music scene, the choir has since performed at venues across London and beyond, including Shakespeare’s Globe, the Royal Albert Hall, Jazz Café, the Royal Concertgebouw and Antwerp’s Queer Arts Festival. Tonight, they embark on a new chapter in the first performance with their newly appointed Musical Director, Jamie Powe.
