As part of Friday Lates at The National Gallery, pianist Clare Hammond gives a solo performance celebrating the work and legacy of French composer and pianist Hélène de Montgeroult
Hélène de Montgeroult (1764–1836), the French composer and pianist was once fêted as one of the finest musicians of her time, although her work is rarely performed today.
During her life she performed in the private salon of artist Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun among others, and was made Professor of Piano at the Conservatoire de Musique in Paris, the first woman to occupy such a position.
On the occasion of ‘Discover Manet and Eva Gonzalès’, Clare Hammond brings to life the work of this early 19th-century musician whose Romantic style was decades ahead of her time.
