Grab a drink and savour the perfect balance of sweet and bitter in Stravinsky’s time-warp drama for three voices.
Enjoy a quirky, romantic, commedia-del-arte fantasy in this early-evening performance.
In 1919, Russian impresario Diaghilev commissioned Stravinsky to put his own spin on 200-year-old music for a new ballet. ‘When he said that the composer was Pergolesi, I thought he must be deranged.’
But Stravinsky was surprised by what he found in the earlier composer’s music: ‘I looked, and I fell in love.’ From an unlikely beginning, Stravinsky whipped up a delicious ballet featuring three solo singers, and added a dash of 20th-century irony. For the first performance, Picasso did the sets.
