Conductor Gianandrea Noseda leads the European Union Youth Orchestra in their second concert of the day at the International Festival. This time they are joined by cello soloist Nicolas Altstaedt to perform Don Quixote alongside Fate Now Conquers by American composer Carlos Simon.
It is a tale which may already be familiar to you: the loveable rogue from La Mancha who lost himself in the pages of romantic literature and emerged as a chivalrous knight under the name Don Quixote. Richard Strauss’s 1897 adaptation casts the cello as the man of the hour and alternately the viola, tenor tuba and bass clarinet as his squire. The piece follows the trials and tribulations of our hero and his second-in-command.
This concert invites you to recline on a beanbag and absorb the adventures of Don Quixote alongside the multi-genre inspired soundworld of Carlos Simon.
