Bristol Opera Centenary Concert ~ Bristol

  • Bristol Aerospace Hayes Way Bristol, England United Kingdom (map)

Bristol Opera has commissioned a new opera by local composer, Joel Baldwin, to be performed under the wings of Concorde.

History often neglects women and, in particular, the role of female artists. This work seeks to redress that imbalance. Joel’s opera will bring to light the work of a Bristolian woman, Anne Harriet Fish. Cartoonist, illustrator and caricaturist, Annie was born in Horfield, Bristol in 1890 and became a successful contributor as a popular illustrator for Punch, The Tatler, Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar. Her flattened caricatures and satirical drawings of the Jazz Age were all the rage amongst the fashionable elite on both sides of the Atlantic in the first half of the last century.

Joel Baldwin is a composer of opera, chamber music, orchestral works, and electronic music whose projects often involve interdisciplinary collaboration specialising in incorporating elements of visual art, and the exploration of the relationship between music and multimedia in different performance contexts.

The composer has crafted a short opera based on an imaginary episode in Annie’s life.
